Historical Information

The Strzelecki Ranges are named after the Polish Count, Paul Edmund de Strzelecki, an energetic and capable man who explored and carried out geological surveys throughout the world. On his journey from Sydney to Melbourne, Strzelecki ventured through Gippsland. His trek through this wild forested region in 1840 proved to be most difficult and the party arrived at Westernport Bay, exhausted and hungry.
